A guy I've worked with for a couple of years came in this spring rattled by a number on a lab report. His doctor had flagged his A1C as prediabetic, told him he needed to "move more," and sent him off with a pamphlet about walking. He's forty-six, sits through back-to-back meetings most of the day, and had already been walking plenty. So he did what a lot of people do with that advice. He added more cardio, bought a new pair of running shoes, and started grinding out miles he didn't enjoy. Three months later the number had barely budged, and he was frustrated enough to ask me the question I wish more people asked first. Was he missing something?
He was. Nobody had told him that the fastest lever he had for his blood sugar wasn't on a treadmill. It was the muscle he wasn't building.
Yes, and it's one of the most underrated tools there is. Strength training improves how your body handles glucose in two different ways at once, which is something steady cardio doesn't do as completely. In the short term, a training session pulls sugar out of your bloodstream and into the working muscle without needing much insulin to do it. Over the long term, building muscle gives your body more room to store and burn glucose around the clock, not just while you're exercising. For someone watching their A1C creep in the wrong direction, that combination is a big deal.
To understand why lifting works, it helps to know where the sugar in your blood actually ends up. Skeletal muscle is the largest site in the body for clearing glucose. When you eat, most of the sugar that leaves your bloodstream gets soaked up by muscle tissue, and the more muscle you carry, the bigger that sponge is. This is the piece most people never hear. Your muscle isn't just there to lift things. It's metabolic real estate, and having more of it makes managing blood sugar easier by default.
Strength training also makes the muscle you already have more responsive to insulin. When you contract a muscle hard against resistance, it opens up a pathway that lets glucose in even when insulin is running low, and that improved sensitivity lingers for a day or more after you train. Do that a few times a week and you've essentially kept a window cracked open the whole week long. You're changing what your body does with fuel long after the session ends, not just burning calories in the moment.
I'm not against cardio. Walking, biking, and getting your heart rate up all help your blood sugar, and my client wasn't wrong to move more. The problem is that cardio alone doesn't build the tissue that does the heavy lifting metabolically. You can log hours on a treadmill and still be walking around with the same small amount of muscle you started with, which means the same limited capacity to store glucose. Cardio spends the sugar. Strength training builds a bigger tank to put it in. When someone tells me their numbers won't move no matter how much they walk, this gap is almost always why.
You don't need to train like a bodybuilder to get the metabolic benefit, and you don't need to live in the gym. Two to three strength sessions a week is plenty, built around the movements that recruit the most muscle at once: squatting, hinging at the hip, pushing, pulling, and carrying something heavy. Those big compound lifts give you the most metabolic return for your time, which matters when you're squeezing training between a job and a family. The other half of the equation is the stuff around the training. Enough protein at your meals helps you actually build the muscle you're training for. None of this is complicated. It just has to be consistent, and it has to include lifting.
Here's my one honest caution. The person who gets a scary lab result and decides to turn things around tends to either do too little, poking at a few machines without ever challenging the muscle, or too much, going so hard the first week that they're too sore to come back. Neither builds the tissue that changes your blood sugar. Progress comes from loading the right movements a little heavier over time, and knowing what "a little heavier" means for your body is exactly where guessing falls apart.
